Charting new horizons: Mauritius a preferred destination for African Expats and Retirees

 
 

Mauritius is increasingly emerging as a preferred choice for work, live and retire in the African continent. Renowned not only for its diverse flora and fauna but also for its deep-rooted connections with Africa, the country offers a distinctive combination of opportunities and cultural integration that appeal to individuals from diverse backgrounds. Whether one seeks employment opportunities, a vibrant lifestyle, or a peaceful retirement, Mauritius stands out as a beacon of possibility and inclusivity within the African landscape.

Known for its business-friendly climate and peaceful environment, Mauritius has been acknowledged by international institutions as a democratic state whereby elections are held every five years reinforcing the country's reputation as a secure and safe jurisdiction.  According to the, EIU Democracy Index 2023, Mauritius remains the only African Country which is classed as Full Democracy. 

Amid the challenges of the pandemic, the Government of Mauritius has highlighted the island's status as a serene sanctuary in the Indian Ocean and introduced the Premium Visa. This initiative underscores Mauritius's commitment to providing a peaceful and stable environment, offering individuals the unique opportunity to work remotely while enjoying the island's tranquillity.

The Premium Visa is valid for 1 year and is renewable. Designed to attract professionals, entrepreneurs, and digital nomads, the Premium Visa provides a conducive environment for remote work, coupled with the island's stunning natural beauty and high-quality lifestyle offerings. As of now, reports indicate that over 2,000 applications for the Premium Visa have been received from individuals across the African region.

Mauritius also provides another avenue for individuals aged 50 years and above to retire on the island through the Retirement Permit scheme which is valid for 10 years and is renewable. This permit also offers the retired non-citizen’s family the opportunity to settle in Mauritius for the same duration. To be eligible for the retirement permit, the applicant must provide a certified bank statement showing an amount of USD 1,500 monthly or an aggregate of USD 18,000 yearly.  At present, there is over 2,000 active retirement/ occupation permit originating from African origins.
