ENLIT AFRICA 2024

The US Embassy in Mauritius invited and facilitated participation of local stakeholders, public and private, at Enlit Africa 2024 which was held in Cape Town, South Africa from 21 to 23 May 2024. Enlit Africa is an event where the most influential energy companies come together to drive opportunity. The conference is widely regarded as the critical business event of the year. The event brings the entire value chain across power, energy and water.

Electricity is the backbone of Africa’s new energy systems, powered increasingly by renewables. Africa is home to 60% of the best solar resources globally, yet only 1% of installed solar PV capacity. The continent is faced with the energy trilemma of reliability, affordability and sustainability.

However, global clean energy transition holds new promise for Africa’s economic and social development. As of May 2022, countries representing more than 70% of global CO2 emissions have committed to reach net zero emissions by around mid-century. This includes 12 African countries that represent over 40% of the continent’s total CO2 emissions. These ambitions are helping set a new course for the global energy sector amid declining clean technology costs and shifting global investment. African countries – nearly all of which are party to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change – are poised to capture the technology spillovers of these changes and attract increasing flows of climate finance. There is no one size fits all solution. Multiple technologies and fuel sources will be needed together with investment in transmission and distribution systems as well as software solutions with local conditions dictating what works best. Africa is thus becoming a beacon of light in the energy space.

Panel discussion at ENLIT AFRICA 2024

Enlit Africa 2024 was indeed the opportunity for stakeholders across Africa to converge and discuss actionable solutions for its power and energy needs. The different sessions covered important topics on renewable energy, storage, green hydrogen technology, financing, policies, project bankability. The event provided a valuable platform for the Mauritian delegation to interact with participants from technologies companies, utilities, financial institutions, generation, transmission & distribution as well as regional and multilateral agencies.

While the delegation had the opportunity to hold one-on-one meetings with the participants facilitated by the US Embassy, the representatives of the Mauritian companies and institutions also met with various other participants to discuss synergy and collaboration for the renewable energy sector in Mauritius.

Significant opportunities exist in mainland Africa for local power producers to explore and cater to the growing demand for electricity from clean sources needs thereby contributing to reach net-zero objectives of Africa.
