Rodrigues is digitally connected to the world, with the Mauritius and Rodrigues Submarine Cable (MARS) cable providing high-speed internet connectivity. The ICT/BPO sector is expected to contribute to the growth of the Rodriguan economy. To further boost the development of the information technology sector and create jobs in Rodrigues, there is a need to enhance capacity building and upskill youth in the ICT/BPO sector and promote the Rodrigues ICT/BPO sector.
The first Technopark project at Baladirou was conceived with the partnership and expertise of the Government of Mauritius as a cornerstone for developing the Rodrigues ICT sector. Based on the opportunities that lie ahead and focusing on the challenges faced by Rodrigues, a National ICT Strategic Plan will enable the ICT/BPO sector to emerge as an engine for sustained economic growth. The vision of Rodrigues for the Technopark at Baladirou is to emulate the Ebene Cybercity Business Park model in Mauritius. This will be possible with the youth playing a more prominent role in the ICT/BPO sector.
Upon completion of the construction of the Technopark, office spaces will be available for lease to potential investors for the setting up of ICT-related businesses in a modern building offering hi-tech facilities. The Technopark at Baladirou consists of constructing a state-of-the-art four-storey building spanning an area of 5,200 m2 at Baladirou, with attractive facades and modern claddings equipped with hi-tech facilities. It is expected that the construction of the building will be completed in 2024.
There are currently three companies operating in the ICT/BPO sector in Rodrigues: Pro Contact, engaged in Call centre activities; CSL BPO Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mauritius Telecom; and Solocal Interactive, which specialises mainly in Call centre / BPO activities and employs over 200 employees. The ICT/BPO sector has been identified as having substantial potential for growth in Rodrigues.
